Frequently Asked Questions

I DON'T HAVE PC ARC/INFO AND I'D LIKE TO KNOW HOW DO I IMPORT THE PACKED PC ARC/INFO FILES INTO ARCVIEW?
The data from our earlier Open-File Reports are in PC Arc/Info Packed format. This format uses PKZip to "pack" the coverages. Pack is a PC Arc/Info command that launches PKZip. This was our old way of doing things, we have since changed our format. All our data are now released in Arc/Info interchange format (*.e00 files). You can get around the fact that you don't have PC Arc/Info. Try this if you want to look at the data in ArcView... In this example, you can change the folder [NAME] as needed. The folder [NAME] refers to the name of the quadrangle, and you can call it whatever you'd like. Create a new folder called [NAME] on the hard drive where you want to use ArcView. Copy all the folders from the COVER directory on disk 1 to the [NAME] folder. Go into any of the new folders (contacts, outcrops, etc.) under [NAME]. There you will see a single file called cover.zip. If you have Winzip or PKZip, you can double click on the cover.zip file and unzip it. Unzipping will extract a bunch a files. Launch ArcView. If you go to the folder [NAME] the PC Arc/Info coverages will be available as themes.

HOW DO I ACCESS THE LOOKUP TABLE FOR THE CONTACTS COVERAGE IN ARCVIEW?
The lookup table CONTACTS.LUT contains a description of the map unit labels (ITEM = LITH) used for tagging polygons in the CONTACTS coverage in our digital geologic maps.  In ArcView, you can view this lookup table by using the "add table" feature.
The lookup table will be identified as "lut.dbf" and is located in the CONTACTS folder.  You can also join the lookup table to the polygon attributes table of the CONTACTS coverage as follows:
