THEORETICAL CONCEPTS IN GIS

This online course has been organized into six lessons that should be approached in order and at your own pace. During our pilot project, each unit was covered in one week. The components of each weekly unit are: an outline and discussion of important concepts in GIS and a reading list.

LESSON 1

  1. GIS Implementation - You learn the different types of networked GIS setups and what questions to consider when designing your GIS (The User Requirement Analysis).
  2. Components of the GIS - A flowchart of each component of a basic GIS with emphasis on the technical specifications of the component and its interoperability with the other components.
  3. CAD vs. Automated Cartography
  4. Cartographic Modeling and Database Design - An introduction to concepts in cartographic modeling, storing information in layers and data structures (including raster, vector and tin).
